Jazz gig kicks off Bute’s musical year

A new Bute musical year got under way this week with the annual ‘New Year Jazz’ gig hosted by the Tim Saul Quartet.
The decision to move the concert from its previous off-island venue, Colintraive village hall, to the Victoria Hotel in Rothesay town centre, certainly seemed to pay off, with a capacity crowd swelled by a number of visitors from the Largs area as well as by some new faces to the Bute jazz scene.
Joining the quartet of Tim Saul on keyboard, Paul McKay on bass, David Gray on drums and John Denman on vibraphones were a series of guest artists, including Robin Dow on trumpet and trombone, Alec Mack on guitar and jazz mandolin, and singers Clara Thomson, Ruth Wilson, Janet Skillin, Ann Kelmsley and Jenny Brown.
