Island Voices choir to perform Fauré’s Requiem

THE Island Voices community choir will perform Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem at a special service in Rothesay Trinity Church this Sunday, April 29.

Members of the choir have been hard at work practising the French composer’s best-known major work, under the direction of Tony Spencer, over the last few months, and are eager to share their efforts with as large an audience as possible.

Fauré composed his Requiem in D minor between 1887 and 1890; the first version contained only five movements, but was expanded in a chamber orchestra version which had its premiere in 1893, and which enjoyed a renaissance when John Rutter discovered Fauré’s original manuscript in the Bibliotheque National in Paris in the early 1980s.

The orchestral version of the Requiem - which Fauré later declared he had “composed for fun” - was performed at the composer’s own funeral at the Église de la Madeleine in Paris in 1924, though another 12 years would pass before its first performance on British shores.

Sunday’s service begins at 5.30pm; there is no admission charge, although an offering will be taken up during the course of the service.
