Bute Island Foods was crowned winner at a free-from food awards ceremony held in Germany.

The FreeFrom Awards, the UK’s only industry awards for free-from food, were started in 2008 by FoodsMatter and FreeFrom Foods Matter to encourage innovation and celebrate excellence in the freefrom food industry.

Bute Island Foods’ Original Creamy Sheese, a soya alternative to cream cheese, was crowned winner in the category of ‘dairy alternatives’, while the firm’s Garlic and Herb Creamy Sheese was highly commended by a panel of 70 expert judges.

Judges also enjoyed the “delicate Mediterranean feel” of Bute Island Foods’ new alternative to feta, Greek Style Sheese, seeing fit to place it on the awards shortlist, while Spring Onion and Cracked Black Pepper Creamy Sheese made the shortlist for the UK contingent of the FreeFrom Awards, now in its ninth successful year.

The Bute Island Foods team (established in 1994 on Bute, employing 22 islanders) is dedicated to their goal of making it “easy for people to eat a diet that is dairy and animal free” whether for ethical or health reasons.
