Thirteen pupils from Rothesay Academy recently embarked on a four day adventure on ‘Maybe’, an 80 year old Tall Ship.

The group - comprised of pupils from S1-S3 - had a great time learning all sorts of different skills such as helming the ship, working together as a team to hoist and take down sails, tying knots, climbing out on the bowsprit to stow sails, cleaning, helping to prepare food, and also in some cases, learning how to wash and dry dishes!

It wasn’t all hard work though, with time at night to enjoy games below and on deck, in addition to a trip ashore to Tighnabruiach one afternoon.

With the help of four crew members, the pupils they sailed from Rothesay to Brodick Bay, on to Otter Ferry, before returning to Rothesay, covering a distance of 90 miles.

To celebrate the end of the trip, a few members of the crew jumped off the ship into the water when the ship was anchored in the bay - which they found was a rather chilly experience!

Overall, the group felt that despite the initial shock that all the phones and large amounts of sweets were taken in at the beginning of the journey, they had a great time.
