Members of Bute’s church congregations gathered at the historic St Blane’s Chapel early on Sunday morning for the island’s Easter Sunday ‘sunrise service’.

The United Church of Bute, Rothesay Trinity, St Andrew’s, St Paul’s, Rothesay Christian Fellowship and Ardbeg Baptist Church were all represented at the service, a fixture on the island’s calendar of church events for many years.

And though the weather didn’t play ball, with a thick mist enveloping the site at the south end of the island ensuring that the sun - which actually rose half an hour before the service began - was nowhere to be seen, that didn’t prevent the celebration of the dawning of Easter with a combination of readings and hymns, that latter accompanied by a venerable ‘kist o’whistles’, a pedal-powered organ maintained and played by local resident Ian Sinclair.
