People on Bute are being encouraged to take part in the 'Living It Up' challenge to walk a million steps in their community.

The man in the song might have “walked a million miles for one of your smiles” - but Bute is being challenged to achieve the slightly-more-attainable target of a million steps as part of an initiative to get Argyll and Bute walking more.

The ‘community challenge’ is being run throughout the area by Living It Up, a health, wellbeing and self-management website for people over 50 in Scotland who may be living with long term conditions.

So far the ‘league table’ for the challenge in Argyll and Bute is being led by Helensburgh, where people taking part have walked around 370 miles - 74 per cent of their target.

Bute lies in fifth place on 155 miles (31 per cent of target) - with Mid Argyll second on three hundred miles (60 per cent), Oban third on 240 (48 per cent) and Cowal fourth on 205 (41 per cent).
