Rothesay man completes ‘Channel challenge’ - on one lung!
Tom Muir completed his 1,416-length 'Channel Challenge' - the equivalent of crossing the English Channel - at Rothesay Leisure Pool on November 30.
A Rothesay man has completed the equivalent distance of swimming the English Channel – despite having a lung removed less than 18 months ago.
Tom Muir, who was diagnosed with cancer in May 2011, raised £610.10 for the national Stand Up To Cancer appeal by swimming 1,416 lengths of Rothesay Leisure Pool – the same as the 22 miles across the Channel.
Tom and his wife Winifred presented a cheque for the sum raised to Anna Harrison, manager of the Cancer Research UK charity’s Rothesay shop, who co-ordinated Bute’s Stand Up To Cancer participation in October.
Tom, already a strong swimmer before his illness, said: “I’d decided I was going to come back to the pool anyway, so I came in one day, bought my season ticket and saw a leaflet at the reception encouraging people to sign up for a swimming challenge.
“I thought ‘there’s something I can do’, and since Winifred volunteers at the Cancer Research UK shop I knew all about Stand Up To Cancer - and I thought well, if Anna can organise the island into a huge photocall in Guildford Square, this was the least I could do.”
