Members of a Rothesay support group set up to help local people affected by cancer gathered this week to celebrate the 90th birthday of one of their longest-serving members.

Members of Nancy Smith has been at the heart of Cancer Support Scotland’s work on Bute ever since her arrival on the island in 1997, and the charity’s chief executive, Colin Graham, was among several special guests invited to a surprise party organised by the group to mark Nancy’s birthday and to thank her for her efforts over the years.

Nancy, who was diagnosed with cancer 23 years ago but beat the condition with the help of surgery and support, said: “Helping others is my way of saying thank you and showing my appreciation - if I can help a little it is all worthwhile and gives me some satisfaction.”
