Ninety-year-old Bessie Weir from Rothesay has become the second Cancer Research UK volunteer on Bute to win a Flame of Hope award from the charity.

Bessie has been part of the team at the charity’s shop in the town’s Montague Street for the last 15 years, and follows in the footsteps of her colleague Isa Williamson, who received a similar award in 2010.

Shop manager Anna Harrison said: “Bessie goes over and above the call of duty. She’s in nearly every day, running errands, going to the bank and generally helping out, even though she’s only supposed to do a shift on a Thursday!”
