FORMER Silencers vocalist JJ Gilmour opened a new year for acoustic music on Bute with a storming session at St Paul’s Church Hall in Rothesay on Sunday night.

Gilmour, with support from his former Silencers bandmate Phil Kane on keyboard, combined material from his three solo albums with a sprinkling from Dancing Shoes, the musical about George Best for which he wrote much of the music, and a crowd-pleasing selection from his Silencers years.

The regular set ended with Jenny Fly, from his debut solo album, inspired by the memory of his late childhood friend Paul Anthony Lennon, although the encore of Wild Mountain Thyme, The Silencers’ biggest hit, ended a memorable night on an upbeat note.
