Former Rothesay resident receives Arctic Star medal

Former Rothesay resident, Commander Ian Hamilton, was presented with the Arctic Star medal at the Erskine Home in Bishopton recently, for the part he played in the Arctic Convoys.

Commander Hamilton - who is the grand age of 102 - is ex-Royal Navy and had a 30 year naval career, and is currently a resident in the Erskine Home which provides nursing and medical care for former members of our armed forces.

The Arctic Convoys, reportedly called the ‘worst journey in the world’ by Winston Churchill, took supplies to the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1945.

More than 3,000 men died while on the convoys.
