A former pupil at a Bute primary school is making great strides in the sporting arena as a promising badminton player and weightlifter.

Biatrice Gabell, who’s now aged 16, took up badminton under local coach Kathleen Sidebottom after moving to the island in April 2008 and starting at St Andrew’s Primary in Rothesay.

Biatrice, who now lives in Dalry in north Ayrshire, was offered a place at the Glasgow School of Sport in 2010, and has gone from strength to strength since then, winning several regional titles across Scotland and being chosen as a reserve for the Scottish team at the British Schools Games.

On top of that, she took up weightlifting in 2013 and has won several prizes since then, including the Scottish schools and under-18 championships, and has been named in the Scotland training squad for the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.
