Argyll and Bute’s former Liberal Democrat MP, Alan Reid, has paid tribute to Charles Kennedy (55), who died yesterday at his home in Fort William.

Speaking of Mr Kennedy, who led the Lib Dems from 1999 to 2006, Mr Reid said: “I am very sad at the tragic early death of Charles Kennedy. I have lost a good friend.

“Charles was exceptionally talented and devoted his whole adult life to public service. He had the ability to connect with people and brought a positive style of politics to Westminster.

“Whether it was on behalf of his constituents or as party leader, Charles was always able to make a clear compelling case without resorting to attacks on political opponents.

“He was a great help to me offering a lot of valuable advice and assistance. We worked together on many campaigns that affected both our constituencies.

“No other politician in modern times has been as popular as Charles. On his many campaign visits to Argyll and Bute, members of the public were literally queuing up to congratulate him and shake his hand.

“Charles will be very much missed by his family, particularly his son Donald, and his many friends.”
