First meeting of Rothesay’s Scottish history group

The inaugural meeting of Rothesay’s new Scottish history group was held in Rothesay Pavilion on Saturday.

An audience of around 40 people attended to hear Iain Ramsay of Greenock talk on the ‘Radical War’ of 1820 - and in particular the events in Greenock on April 8 that year, when nine civilians were shot and killed by the Port Glasgow Militia.

Mr Ramsay was introduced by the group’s founder, Hamish Kirk, who mentioned the need for a Scottish perspective on history which is often not mentioned in history as it is taught in school.

The group’s next meeting is on Saturday, May 11, again at Rothesay Pavilion, when Professor Alan Riach of Glasgow University will talk about Hugh MacDiarmid.
