FIRE crews were called to a blaze at an award-winning Rothesay cafe on Friday evening.

Local retained firefighters attended the West End Cafe in Gallowgate after the alarm was raised at around 6.40pm.

Suzanne McGhee, who lives in the flat above the property, told The Buteman she had heard “a rumble”, similar to the sound of a heavy goods vehicle passing in the street.

Less than a minute later, she said, a member of the West End’s staff banged on her front door and told her to get out because of a fire in the cafe.

Rothesay resident Kim Roberts posted a message on Facebook saying she had been in the cafe at the time, and had seen what looked like steam coming from where staff were serving, then there had been “a wire smell” and a rumbling sound before “it went up”.

At the time of writing fire crews were still on the scene; the Gallowgate has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians.
