Prospective primary school teachers will be able to study for their post-graduate diploma in primary education in Argyll from next year - though not, initially at least, on Bute itself.

However, Argyll College UHI, which will begin offering the Professional Graduate Diploma in Primary Education (PGDE) at its Oban campus in August 2015, says it hopes to be able to make the course available throughout the area in future.

The 12-month course - the first post-graduate diploma to be offered by Argyll College UHI - will be provided in partnership with Argyll and Bute Council, and will see students based in Oban using video conferencing and online forums to work with other student groups across the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Additionally, each student will spend 19 weeks of the course on placement within one of the area’s primary schools, gaining vital hands-on teaching experience in our unique rural environment.

A spokesperson for Argyll College UHI said: “We are certainly keen to make the course available more widely and we will be looking at how feasible it is to do this for future years.”
