The polls have closed at Apple Tree Nursery in Rothesay - and three-year-old Mya Zavaroni has been elected as the new chairperson of the nursery’s pupil council.

Six candidates - Charlie McNeill, Lynsey Martin, Keavy Kermath, Kalisha Simmons, Mia Melvin and Mya - stood for election, and while they might have been a little bit bemused by all the fuss, there was plenty of canvassing going on behind the scenes as their parents, family and friends were all asked for their votes.

The poll was open for three hours on Tuesday, September 10, from 11am and 2pm, and after the votes were counted Mya was declared the winner, with Kalisha elected as vice-chair.

All six candidates will be part of the pupil council, though - and all, we’re told, will have a very important job to do when the committee meets for the first time!
