Rothesay Academy pupils Nisha Middleton and Euan McGregor flew to Canada on May 31 to begin the Baird of Bute Society Canadian Science Scholarship.

Both Nisha and Euan have been keeping a blog to record their experiences, and have so far reported on a visit to Niagara Falls, a trip to Ripley’s Aquarium, two days at the Ontario Science Centre, and time spent at the University of Toronto Mississuaga campus to shadow those who work with Professor Patrick Gunning (formerly of Bute) in the Gunning Group.

The Gunning Group is carrying out pioneering research aimed at finding a cure for cancer.

Chris Markwell, chairman of the Baird of Bute Society, told us that the pair, both avid movie fans, had also awoken one morning to find themselves next-door to the set where the new Batman/Superman movie, starring Ben Affleck and Amy Adams, is being filmed.

He said: “Once the movie is released they will be pleased to decipher the Gotham City portrayed on screen back into the Toronto downtown they have grown to know during their Baird Scholarship programme.

“Not strictly part of their Baird Science programme curriculum; but nonetheless very exciting!”
