Police in Rothesay have renewed their warning to local business owners and householders to be on their guard after a small business in the town was the target of an apparent telephone scam bid.

The unnamed business received a call this week from someone claiming to be from a branch of Barclays and stating that a number of non-cash transactions had not been recorded on the bank’s electronic systems.

The caller asked the business owner to enter account details via their phone’s keypad: thankfully the owner wasn’t taken in, and instead alerted police, who believe the call was almost certainly an attempted scam.

Business owners and householders are reminded - again! - that banks do not cold-call customers asking for personal or business details over the phone.
