Man jailed for drunken joy ride

A MAN who stole a local business’ delivery van and took it on a joy ride around the town while under the influence of alcohol was jailed for eight months at Rothesay Sheriff Court.

Stuart Falconer (25), 32 Watson Place, Ardbeg, appeared from custody on Monday and pleaded guilty to seven charges relating to road traffic and public disorder offences.

The court was told that at 4.40am on Friday, April 5, staff at the Electric Bakery in Watergate became aware the delivery van which had been parked outside was missing. The matter was reported to police who managed to trace the van, via CCTV, driving around the town. The van was driven down Watergate and upon being confronted by staff from the bakers, reversed at high speed back up the one-way street. Police followed the accused into Trinity Court where Falconer abandoned the car and upon seeing he was faced with a dead-end, attempted to run past officers but was detained.
