Court: Driver who hit Bute school bus avoids ban

A Bute man who collided with a minibus carrying children home from school avoided a ban at Rothesay Sheriff Court on Monday.

Spencer Chambers (71), address given as Kerryfearn Cottage, North Bute, admitted driving without due care and attention or consideration for other road users on the unclassified road near Ballianlay Farm on February 12.

Chambers, the court heard, had pulled over to allow the school bus room, but had clipped the grass verge while doing so – and on trying to correct his manoeuvre, collided with the bus, which had three children on board.

Jim Hannay, defending, said the incident was the result of “a momentary lapse” by Chambers, and that the collision had been relatively minor.

Sheriff Ruth Anderson imposed a £200 fine and endorsed Chambers’ licence with five penalty points.

* A Greenock man who became aggressive with police after officers were called to a disturbance at his partner’s home in Rothesay was jailed for 60 days at the town’s sheriff court on Monday.

Patrick Altizio (33), whose address was given as 40 Paton Street, Greenock, admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner which was likely to cause other people fear or alarm in the incident at an address in Mansefield Place, High Street on June 29, 2012.

Altizio’s agent said her client was currently serving a custodial sentence in Greenock on an unrelated matter, with an earliest release date of July 5.
