A Royal Navy bomb disposal team was called to Bute’s most popular beach this week.

The experts, from the Faslane naval base, were summoned to Ettrick Bay after a member of the public using a metal detector alerted police after discovering what was thought to be a spent military flare.

The item, which did not give the bomb disposal team cause for concern, was detonated in a ten-foot-deep hole in the sand.

Natalie Clifton, who was visiting the beach at the time and sent us the picture above, said: “We got quite a surprise. A loud bang, the car shook and a lot of smoke. Not what we expected to see on our quiet walk!”
