A petition has been launched protesting against the refusal of planning permission for the Bute House Hotel in Rothesay's town centre.

A petition has been launched urging Argyll and Bute Council to reconsider its decision to refuse planning permission for double-glazed UPVC windows at the Bute House Hotel in Rothesay.

Following the decision by the Scottish Government earlier this month to dismiss an appeal by hotel owners Harry and Hazel Greene against the council’s refusal of their plans, The Buteman has organised the petition with the support of Argyll and Bute MSP Michael Russell in the hope of persuading local planners and councillors to change their view.

Mr Russell, in a letter to be published in full in the January 31 issue of The Buteman, said: “No one can understand why a local business which is trying to improve the town is being hassled and harassed in this way.

“In addition to overwhelming community support, all the local elected representatives in the Community Council, Argyll and Bute Council, the Scottish Parliament, Westminster and the European Parliament are on his side and I myself have confirmation that the decision is not one that is mandatory on the council nor demanded by Historic Scotland.

“I would be happy to help present [the petition] to the council, along with other community representatives, and seek a meeting with the council at the highest level to try and secure a change of heart or a compromise that meets Mr Greene’s objectives which include good sound insulation, ease of cleaning and low maintenance, all essential if the hotel is to succeed.”

Any other local businesses who would like to help by taking a hard copy of the petition can contact The Buteman on 01700 502503 or call at our office at 5 Victoria Street, Rothesay.
