ButE’s own version of the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols took place this week in the atmospheric surroundings of the Marble Chapel at Mount Stuart.

The Mount Stuart event may not quite match the majesty of the world-renowned Christmas Eve service from King’s College Cambridge, but with six carols, five readings, five choral performances, a solo guitarist and a group of Rothesay Academy instrumentalists there was more than enough to satisfy even the biggest festive appetite.

The guest readers at this year’s Mount Stuart service were Bert Alexander, Sophie Reid, Andrew Nicol, Elspeth Squair and Peter Lewis-Smith, while Alistair McIntyre and the Rothesay Academy Chamber Ensemble provided musical interludes along with the choir under the direction of Ian Sinclair.

Proceeds from this year’s service will go to the Argyll-based charity Mary’s Meals, which provides more than 700,000 chronically-poor children in the developing world with a daily meal in a place of education, attracting them to the classroom where they can gain a basic education that provides an escape route from poverty.
