Veterans’ charity Erskine is hoping that residents of Bute will show they’re ‘Proud to be Purple’ during the organisation’s annual Erskine Week fund-raising campaign.

Residents of Bute have enthusiastically supported Erskine, which looks after more than 1,100 veterans in five specialist care homes across the country, for many years.

The island has a particularly close connection to the Erskine Home at Bishopton, currently home to 102-year-old Commander Ian Hamilton, a former resident of Rothesay who recently received the Arctic Star medal in recognition of his Second World War service in the infamous Arctic convoys.

The Bishopton facility was also home to another former Bute resident, Great Escape survivor Jack Harrison, until his death in June 2010 at the age of 97.

To find out how you can help this year’s Erskine Week campaign, which runs from June 1-8, call 0300 123 1203 or email gopurple@erskine.org.uk for more information.
