The total raised on Bute for this year’s Stand Up To Cancer appeal has risen to more than £7,000 - and the money is still being counted!
The sum - £7,012.41, to be exact - was revealed this week by Anna Harrison, manager of Cancer Research UK’s Rothesay shop and co-ordinator of the island’s Stand Up To Cancer fund-raising efforts.
In a letter of thanks to all those who contributed to the campaign’s success on the island, to be published in full in the next issue of The Buteman, Anna says: “I would like to express both my personal thanks and the thanks of my team and everyone at Cancer Research UK for the most wonderful Stand Up To Cancer campaign on Bute through the month of October.
“There are so many people who supported and took part, each in different ways, not least the general public, who I so often list last in my letters of thanks but who donate so kindly and wholeheartedly time and time again.
“To those who did, I can only say that all our wonderful and crazy fundraising ideas would be pointless without their continued generosity.”
The money was raised at numerous public and private events on the island and beyond throughout the month, including a bag pack, a gunge bath, an abseil and, on October 18 in Rothesay’s Guildford Square, an attempt to set a world record for the largest ceilidh ever held in a single venue.
