Among the big unsung heroes of this year’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign on Bute were players from Bute Rugby Club, who volunteered to have their legs waxed in aid of the cause.

Local beautician Mel Jack administered the treatment at Cancer Research UK’s Rothesay shop on Thursday, where we found Kevin Smith tentatively admiring his hairless shins and team captain Thomas Connor looking only slightly nervous as he prepared to go through the pain barrier - in full view of passers-by!

Nor were rugby players the only ones to undergo the treatment - Ryan Cobain also volunteered, having clearly got a taste for the experience after having his legs waxed for Children in Need at Rothesay Academy last year.

The Bute players - whose new kit sports the Cancer Research UK logo - were also out in force on Friday, joining members of the public and Bute’s primary pupils at the Big Bute Photocall in aid of Stand Up To Cancer in Guildford Square. Well done to all involved!
