BUTE residents are being asked to be extra-cautious when using cash points in Rothesay after a local resident fell victim to a ‘skimming’ machine.
‘Skimmers’ are machines which are placed over the bank card slot on cash point machines and read the card’s magnetic strip as it passes into the machine. Given they are discreet, ‘skimmers’ can be difficult to spot.
The woman concerned only became aware something wasn’t right when she was contacted and informed there was suspected fraudulent activity on her account. It is thought that the machine may have been installed on Lloyds TSB machine in Montague Street.
If you believe a machine may have been tampered with, you should alert bank staff to your concerns and contact the local police.
