Argyll and Bute MSP Michael Russell has hit out at “shocking” figures which show that half of the users of Bute’s food bank are disabled.
Mr Russell met Julie Semple, manager of Bute Advice Centre, which oversees the food bank’s operation, during a visit to Bute on Friday.
“Obviously the foodbank is a non-political organisation,” Mr Russell said, “but for politicians like me, the thought that people have to rely on food banks in such a wealthy country is profoundly shocking.
“The details that Julie told me are even more shocking with 50 per cent of users being disabled and with demand increasing because of the horrific way in which welfare is administered by the Tories.
“Scotland should not rest until it has eliminated the need for food banks and that means we must control our own welfare system which we can only do with a Yes vote.”
