The Bute branch of the British Red Cross has raised 1,469.15 following a week of fund-raising on the island.

Local Red Cross members attended a service at St Paul’s Church recently to mark the beginning of a week’s fund-raising on Bute.

Volunteers were out and about around the island throughout the week and a street collection was scheduled for Friday, May 13. The date didn’t bode well for anyone even slightly superstitious, however, on the day everyone was very generous.

The contributions on May 13 were added to the total from the door to door collections and Diana Smith, chair of the local Red Cross group was delighted to announce that the grand total of £1,469.15 had been raised.

Thanks are due to all the volunteers, the generous members of the public, and to the very helpful staff members at the Co-operative.

The work of the Red Cross goes on all over the world - wherever aid is needed - as well as locally.

In addition to fund-raising, local volunteers are involved in hospital transport when required, first aid training, a first aid group, supply and maintenance of wheelchairs and assisting with the delivery of Meals on Wheels’ all of which are made possible thanks to the provision of a Red Cross vehicle.
