Bute couple George and Myra Love have been named ‘supporters of the year’ by the Cancer Support Scotland charity.

The Loves, who live in Kilchattan Bay, received the award after raising more than £3,000 for the charity – also known as ‘Tak Tent’, an old Scots’ phrase meaning ‘take care’ – among the community on Bute.

Following George’s diagnosis with prostate cancer two years ago, Myra decided to attend the charity’s Bute support group – and together the couple decided to take part in a sponsored ‘zip slide’ across the River Clyde in March.

The Loves’ son set his parents a target of £500 in sponsorship for the event – but the generosity of their many friends on the island meant the couple ended up raising six times that amount.

Myra told The Buteman this week: “Without the support of the Bute community, particularly Kilchattan Bay residents and Apple Tree Nursery, we could never have raised the £3,000-plus that we did.”
