Members of Bute Arts Club went in search of inspiration for future projects on a recent visit to Dumfries House in Ayrshire.

The party was split into two groups, both accompanied by excellent guides and assistants, who gave a very fulsome explanation of the wonderful furnishings and artwork on display.

Formerly owned by the Bute family, Dumfries House and its internationally-renowned collection of 18th-century furniture, including fine examples of the work of Thomas Chippendale, was bought for the nation in 2007 in a deal brokered by HRH Prince Charles, the Duke of Rothesay, and the Bute group’s tour was made all the more fascinating by the enduring links between the house, and many of the items in its collection, and the island.
