Work has begun this week on the long-awaited renovation of a decaying tenement building in the centre of Rothesay.

The block at 21-25 Montague Street, at the junction with High Street, is one of the priority buildings for the Rothesay Townscape Heritage Initiative, which received £2.6 million in March 2011 to breathe new life into the centre of the town.

The programme of work required on the Montague Street block includes roof works, lead works, down pipe and gutter repairs, re-pointing, re-rendering, structural and masonry repairs, internal improvements to the common close and an external repaint, as well as full consolidation of the eastern gable end wall of the building, which faces on to a gap site in Guildford Square sold earlier this year for redevelopment.

Residents and business owners at 21-15 Montague Street have all paid a contribution towards the cost of the work.
