Tesco has taken out a lease on the ground floor shop unit at this new building in Rothesay's Guildford Square - but has yet to confirm when, or even whether, the new store will open.

Bute’s shoppers will have to wait until later this summer - at best - to find out whether supermarket giant Tesco is still coming to Rothesay.

The firm announced a year ago this week that it would be opening a new store at 15-19 Montague Street “early in 2015”, and took on a lease for the premises from local developer George Hanson Building Contractors in March.

But since then there has been no sign no sign of the company moving in to fit out the space, or of any attempt to recruit staff for the store.

A spokesperson told The Buteman: “I appreciate there will be a level of frustration locally that I cannot offer a fuller update on our plans for Rothesay at the moment.

“However as soon as I can I’ll make sure you and the community are fully updated.

“I hope to come back to you later in the summer with an update.”
