The fate of a former Rothesay church building which has lain empty for 35 years still hasn’t been decided.

A community group was set up in September to look at a sustainable future for the former West Church building in Argyle Street, which was declared unsafe by Argyll and Bute Council’s building control officers in November 2013.

A spokesperson for the council said this week: “We are continuing to work positively with the community group as they explore options for the future sustainable use of the building.

“While we are supportive of the aspirations of the community, we must carefully balance these against our duty to maintain public safety.”

The church closed in 1978 after its congregation voted to unite with that of Rothesay Trinity.
