A Brandane veteran of the Arctic Convoys has been awarded with the Ushakov Medal for ‘demonstrating courage and prowess in sea warfare’.

William Weir, who was born in Rothesay in 1921 and lived on the island until he was 31-years-old, was presented with the medal on Thursday, April 30, by the Russian consulate.

Mr Weir, whose sister Bessie still resides on the island, was a pupil of Rothesay Academy, and following his studies worked in the local branch of the British Linen Bank.
