Author trio to visit Rothesay for World Book Day

Three authors are to visit Rothesay Joint Campus as part of the annual World Book Day celebrations next week.

Scottish author Alan Bissett will talk to Rothesay Academy S3 pupils about fiction writing on World Book Day itself - Thursday, March 7 - while Elizabeth Laird and her husband David McDowall will meet pupils at Rothesay Primary Pre-5 and P7 on Friday, March 8, to read stories and talk about how to write and research.

Alan Bissett, born in Falkirk in 1975, was named the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Writer of the Year in 2011.

His debut novel, Boyracers, was published in 2001, and was followed by The Incredible Adam Spark in 2005 and Death of a Ladies’ Man, shortlisted for the Scottish Arts Council’s Fiction of the Year prize, in 2009.

He has also written plays, a ‘one-woman show’ and a short documentary, The Shutdown, based on his experience of growing up in the shadow of the Grangemouth oil refinery, which has won or been shortlisted for several international awards.

Pack Men, his fourth novel and a sequel to Boyracers, was published in September 2011, while a film version of Boyracers is in development. He’s also working on a new play and a show for Youth Musical Theatre UK, and makes numerous school visits across Scotland and festival appearances across the world.

Elizabeth Laird, meanwhile, has written novels for older children and young adults and for new readers of English, picture books, ‘re-tellings of great stories’ and much more.

Her latest novel for young adults, The Prince Who Walked With Lions, has been shortlisted for a Scottish Book Trust award - in fact, the ceremony takes place on World Book Day itself, which is why her visit to Rothesay takes place the following day.

Her husband David McDowall is the author of Bute, the comprehensive 2010 guide to the island combining history, walks, wildlife, culture and much more besides.
