Are you entitled to a Warm Home Discount?

The staff and volunteers at Bute Advice Centre would like to remind everyone about the Warm Home Discount Scheme, and that the time for applying will soon run out.

This is a scheme whereby certain groups of people may qualify for £130 credit, which can be added to their electricity account or credited to their pre-payment meter. If you receive Pension Credit you will automatically qualify for this discount and if you have not already been notified you should contact your supplier.

Those who receive other income related state benefits or disability benefits, or those who are on a low income and receive Child Tax Credits, should contact their electricity supplier to enquire whether they qualify for the scheme. Each of the ‘Big Six’ suppliers has slightly different criteria so we cannot list all the eligibility criteria for all of the companies in the scheme.

If you think you might qualify for this discount, you must apply now, as applications to most of the elecrticty companies must be made by the end of the year. Scottish Gas will take applications by phone: 0800 294 8604 and give your customer number and details of your income or the benefits you receive. To apply to Scottish Hydro you must complete an application form. You can download the form online or call Scottish Hydro on 0800 300 111 and request an application form. If your electricity is supplied by any of the other large utility companies, you can contact them at the number printed on your electricity bill to ask if you are eligible to apply to their Warm Home Discount Scheme.

We also wanted to let readers of The Buteman know about the Free Appliance Scheme. If you are a Scottish Hydro customer who does not currently have a cooker, washing machine or fridge freezer (or if your appliance is broken or more than ten years old) we have a limited number of these items to give away to people who qualify for the Free Appliance Scheme under the rules set out by Scottish Hydro.

To qualify, your gas or electricity must be supplied by Scottish and Southern (or Scottish Hydro) and only certain groups such as the elderly, vulnerable or those on certain benefits will qualify. If you feel you may qualify and would like more information, please contact the Bute Advice Centre in the new year on (01700) 502784.
