Alan Murphy to play live in Rothesay in April

The name of Glasgow-born singer and songwriter Alan Murphy has been added to Bute’s 2013 live music calendar.

Murphy, whose performing and writing career dates back to the 1970s, will play at St Paul’s Church Hall in Rothesay on Saturday, April 6 at a gig organised by Transclyde Music, the local group formed to promote live acoustic music on the island.

Murphy has played throughout the UK over the years, having begun by playing keyboards and singing in numerous Glasgow bands at venues such as the fondly-remembered Burns Howff in the city’s West Regent Street.

He has also produced seven albums of personal work, most recently 2009’s ‘Could’ve Been Good’, and has supported Sam Brown, Maggie Bell and Wishbone Ash as well as playing an informal gig with Paolo Nutini.

Murphy’s easy blues style went down a treat on his last visit to Bute in March 2011, and drew comparisons from several members of the audience to the style of the late John Martyn.
