A Frank conversation with top Bute artist
Artistic impressions: Artist Frank Brown with Long Hot Summer, one of many striking multi-image paintings which adorn the walls of the home he shares with wife Jean in Ardbeg.
Frank Brown has moved in some fairly illustrious circles during his lifetime:Eric Clapton, Terry Jones, the Queen Mother and many of the best-known figures in horse racing, to name just a few.
On Bute, where Frank and his wife Jean have lived since 2006, Frank is probably best known for his equestrian paintings – one of which, of two of the island’s hard-working Clydesdale horses – raised more than £560 for Macmillan Cancer Support at a raffle held by the local Saturday Art Club at last year’s Rothesay Horticultural Society show.
But as those big names suggest, Frank’s own story isn’t just about horses. And while he might be a Home Counties boy by birth and geographical upbringing, his feet have always been planted firmly on the ground.
