SWORDS to ploughshares is the normal method of Biblical progress, but a former Bute church is in line to be converted into dwelling houses under a planning application submitted to Argyll and Bute Council.

Public comments close on Friday for the application to convert the former St Ninian's Church in Port Bannatyne's Shore Road into seven townhouses and two dwelling houses.

The application, submitted by Mr W. Taylor, of Orsett in Essex, indicat
es that the houses inside the former church building will be constructed on three levels with a total ground floor occupancy of 615 square metres and a first floor area of 470 square metres, with the top floor occupying a total of two hundred square metres.

All nine houses will have two bedrooms, though only three will be 'traditional', with the bedrooms on the upper levels - the other six will feature ground floor bedrooms.

The building's existing traditional stone and render facade and natural slate roof will be maintained, although there will be minor modifications to the external doors for access with a communal entrance hall.

Inside the former church, there will be a communal hallway on the ground floor.

There will also be new vehicular access and parking places for 11 cars, but no trees or shrubs will need to be cleared from the site.

St Ninian's Church held its last service in 2006, since when its members, along with those in Kingarth and Kilchattan Bay, have joined fellow worshippers in the United Church of Bute at the former High Kirk in Rothesay.
