BUTE'S new alcohol bye-laws were officially introduced this Monday - more than doubling the size of the restricted zone within Rothesay and its outskirts where drinking in public is no longer allowed.
The new layout extends from the northern edge of Skeoch Woods to cover the whole of Rothesay, extending to Craigmore and Montford, with the southern boundary lying at the Millburn Bridge north of Ascog.

The zone has also been extended to include t
he Rothesay Joint Campus, Lovers' Walk, the Meadows and Ballochgoy.

Police have stated there will be an 'education period' until July 17 during which time they will issue warnings for those caught drinking or with open containers of liquor within the new extended areas - however they will though continue to prosecute those caught in the old area as before.

Thereafter prosecutions will result for anyone caught drinking, or in possession of an open container of alcoholic drink, anywhere within the enlarged zone.

The law states "any person who consumes alcoholic liquor in a designated place or is found to be in possession of an open container of alcoholic liquor in a designated place, in circumstances where by it is reasonable to infer that the person intended to drink from it whilst in a designated place, shall be guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine no exceeding level 2 on the standard table."
