A TOURIST from Blackpool was fined a total of £575 and disqualified from driving for four years after pleading guilty to a road traffic offence and a drink-driving charge at Rothesay Sheriff Court on Monday.
The incident took place at 2.30am on Tuesday, June 2 when police spotted Paul Hastewell (52) driving at speed along Ardbeg Road.

Fiscal Tom Smyth told the court police followed Hastewell who stopped shortly after seeing them. They tested him for
alcohol levels and found that he registered at twice the legal limit.

Hastewell's solicitor, Mr Gallacher, told Sheriff John Herald his client had been staying at a local hotel with his partner.

He had a disagreement with the manager and they decided to leave the premises to find alternative accomodation, despite having been drinking beforehand.

"He accepts that is was a grave error on his part," Mr Gallacher said.
Sheriff Herald fined Hastewell £75 for the speeding charge, as well as £500 and a four-year disqualification for the drink driving offence.

No insurance

A local man was fined £50 and given six penalty points after pleading guilty to driving a vehicle without insurance.

The court heard William Docherty (38), 91 High Street, Rothesay, was stopped by police on Mill Street on Friday, February 27 in a car which belonged to one of his friends.

He had borrowed the vehicle and did not have any papers on him at the time, but later went to the station with the appropriate documentation to discover he was not insured to drive the car.

"I honestly thought I was insured," said Docherty, who chose to represent himself at the proceedings, "but I must have read the documents wrong."

Breach of the peace

A 51-year-old man was brought before Rothesay Sheriff Court on Monday after being charged with two separate instances of breach of the peace.

In the first incident Neil Glancy, address given 9 A'Chrannag, High Street, Rothesay, was charged with a breach of the peace after being reported shouting, swearing and kicking a flat door on the High Street on June 7, 2008.
He pleaded guilty to the second breach of the peace charge which happened on November 4, 2008 following a same similar incident at the same flat.
"I'm not being ageist Mr Glancy, but are you not a bit old for this kid of nonsense," said Sheriff Herald before giving his verdict.
He was admonished of all charges.

Stay out of trouble

A local woman was given three months to prove her good behaviour after she appeared at Rothesay Sheriff Court on Monday on a breach of the peace charge.

Michelle Pendreigh (29), address given 27 Longhill Terrace, Rothesay, was charged with shouting, swearing and committing a breach of the peace following an altercation she had with neighbours during a party on January 3, 2009.

At the time of the incident Pendreigh was already on bail.

Sheriff Herald said if no other reports were raised against Pendreigh during the next three months she would be admonished of the charge.

Window broken

A local man was fined £165 at court on Monday after pleading guilty to damaging his wife's car.

Fiscal Tom Smyth told the court that John Kernaghan (52), address given Flat 7, 8 Tower Street, Rothesay, smashed one of the windows of the car while walking past it in High Street on the night of June 3, shortly after leaving a pub.

Mr Smyth said Kernaghan was separated from his wife.

Kernaghan's solicitor, Jim Hannay, said his client had admitted it was a crazy thing to do and that he had simply lost his temper.

Sheriff Herald fined the accused £100 and ordered him to pay £65 in compensation for the broken window.
