BUTE enjoyed another strong showing at this year's Royal Highland Show at Ingliston, with several island exhibitors returning home with class victories.

Alan and Kirsty Ewing and Wilstrop Crackerjack (better known locally as Guinness) were chosen as the reserve champion in the private driving section, having earlier finished first in a field of 12 in the private driving singles class.

The Ewings just missed out on the Horse of the Year qualifying place which accompanies the private driving championship, this year won by a pair of horses driven by Richard Lanni of Bridge of Earn, Perthshire.

In the heavy horse turnout section, judged by John McMillan of Greenan Mill, Jock, owned by Tom McMillan of Eskechraggan and shown by Tom's daughter Mairi, took fifth place in a class of 14 entries in the single section.

Mairi also showed Jock and Lauren in the pairs turnout class and took tenth place overall.

In the heavy horse classes, John McMillan won the two-year-old filly class with Mill Lady Di and lifted the prize for the breeder of the best yearling or two-year-old filly; he also took fourth place in the yearling filly class with Mill Tilly.

In the light horse section Laura McArthur's two-year-old Westmore Hope won the hunter filly class for the second year running, and her six-year-old Westmore Quest took third prize in the open large riding horse class. Hope has now been sold to a showing home on the Isle of Wight.

There was Bute success too in the beef cattle section, in which Robert and Paula McAlister of Langalbuinoch farm took first place in the shorthorn cattle class for bulls born between June and December 2008 with Langalbuinoch Barney.
