Quality Meat Scotland's Brian Hill, who farms at The Plan at Bute's south end, visited Rothesay Academy recently to hand over a voucher enabling the school's home economics department to purchase locally produced meat.
The idea came about after Br
ian contacted Jessica Herriot of Bute Produce, who is spearheading attempts to ensure islanders use as much local produce as possible.
Jessica, in turn, contacted Davina Smith, the Academy's principal teacher of food design and technology, who was delighted to accept the offer of a voucher on behalf of the school.
Said Davina: "This is a great opportunity to help us promote healthy eating."
Jessica told us that sourcing local food is an important step for anyone looking to reduce their 'carbon footprint'.
"We want to further the links between the school and the farming community," she said.
"If we can overcome the practical difficulties we might be able to arrange visits to island farms for school pupils, and maybe even invite some farmers into the school."
Brian Hill added: "The high quality of Bute meat and local produce will be highlighted at Mount Stuart on Saturday, May 24, when the first 'Eat Bute 08' takes place, so make sure you have that date in your diary - and if you have any suggestions for further projects, please contact Jessica on (01700) 502725."
