While anyone who expressing an interest in public transport may still run the risk of being unfairly labelled an anorak, if you think about it for a moment pictures of old buses, trams and trains are ideal for evoking the sights, sounds and even smells of a particular bygone era.

With that in mind, this week’s nostalgia picture is the latest in our occasional delve into the collection of Jack McDonald, of Ascog Boathouse, showcasing the public transport of the past on Bute.

This particular image shows a 1964 Bedford VAS bus, formerly owned by MacBrayne’s, in Western SMT livery, making its way along Argyle Street towards Rothesay pier. The picture was taken in the summer of 1976 (“freezing as usual”, Jack adds!).

More of Jack’s pictures of old public transport on Bute will feature in the 2014 issue of our sister title Back In The Day, due on sale at the end of this month - don’t miss it!
