With the Cricket World Cup currently grabbing sporting headlines around the world, this week we turn the clock back to 1960 and a picture of Rothesay Academy’s own cricket team.

Sadly for local fans of the game, this was one of the last years in which the Academy had its own team: the school’s pupils had for many years bolstered the ranks of the old Bute County Cricket Club, but that folded just two years after this picture was taken as enthusiasm for other team sports took hold on the island.

This is the first in a series of Rothesay Academy sports team pictures contributed by the school’s former PE teacher and depute head Jim Bicker, though the full names for this pic were supplied by team member and local farmer, councillor and cricket lover Robert Macintyre.

Back row: Andrew Fulton, Gordon Gracie, John McLees, Donald McNeil, Bruce Squair.

Front row: Daniel Carmichael, Robert Macintyre, Douglas Kerr, Douglas Cassells, George Dyer, Robert Nicholson, and John Barrett. Their teacher is Dan McBride.
