For this week’s trip down memory lane we travel back to the 1940s and a picture of the staff at a butcher’s shop in Port Bannatyne owned by James Howat.
The picture was sent to us by reader Peter Hawkes and includes Peter’s mother Winnie, James’s daughter, with her father and other staff members.
Peter tells us that Winnie worked in the shop as both a butcher and book keeper, and believes the photo was taken at its premises in Marine Road before she married in 1946.
The image has a link to the photograph of the Bute Scooter Club which we published last week, and which included James’s grandson, Tommy Howat.
Many thanks to Peter for sharing the picture with us: if you have an old photo you’d like to share with readers of The Buteman, or our sister publication Back In The Day, which is due on sale in June, you can email it to firstname.lastname@example.org or send it to The Buteman, 5 Victoria Street, Rothesay, Isle of Bute PA20 0AJ. You can also give us a call on 01700 502503 to tell us about your pictures, and if you live on Bute we’ll collect them when we can.
