For this week’s amble down Bute’s memory lane, we feature a photo sent to us by John Mackay of the class of 1939 at Rothesay Academy’s primary department.
The group is pictured outside the imposing building on Westlands Road, which housed the Academy’s primary pupils, just a year after its completion.
John, who now lives in England, writes: “I am there, alongside Laurie Howell and Romano Zavaroni. I remember quite a few of the names of course,, and although I live three hundred miles away we bump into each other in a series of coincidences.
“I met Romano at his home outside Crarae Gardens a few years ago, Buddy Yates called into my golf club, maybe 30 years ago - that’s Penn, Wolverhampton. L
“aurie must now be a retired sea captain - he was commodore of P&O in 1991, and we met in Alexandria for a drink together more than 60 years ago, and then in Glasgow after my grandmother’s funeral, and then over his garden wall at Ascog 30 years ago.
“I left Rothesay in 1946 but get back from time to time - even cycled back some 370 miles each way a few times before I left school in England. That was when I was 14 or 15.”
If you recognise any others in the group, please get in touch - and don’t forget that we’re always on the lookout for pictures of the people, places and events of Bute in bygone days.
