This week’s trip into the photographic archives of The Buteman’s readers shows a classic summer scene from Rothesay’s 1950s holiday heyday.

Within a few years of this picture being taken, many of the families pictured on the beach at Children’s Corner would have been seduced by the promise of guaranteed sunshine and increasingly affordable package holidays to Spain, instead of a trip ‘doon the watter’ for the Glasgow Fair fortnight.

More than half a century later Bute is still working hard to establish its place in the contemporary holiday market, with an increasing emphasis on the beauties of the island as a whole: in the 1950s many of those pictured here would rarely, if ever, have left the boundaries of Rothesay during their stay.

This picture was contributed by reader James McAlister senior of Bogany farm near Rothesay: if you have any pictures of the people, places or events of bygone Bute, why not share them with other readers?
